Kanye West screened  a forty minute movie written, directed and staring him for journalists, friends and industry insiders in Hollywood on Monday.  The movie titled Runaway is set to usher in his fifth studio album which will drop before the end of this year. Runaway  would be premiered simultaneously on most MTVand BET on Saturday (23rd October).

Poster for the single "Runaway" that Kanye West performed at the VMAs 2010.

Following the screening, Kanye West took umbrage at what he deemed as a condescending review by a Los Angeles Times reporter on their website. He wasted no time in making his feelings felt onhis latest sounding board Twitter. Apart from the tone of the review, the writer had also dared to get the title of the forthcoming album wrong, calling it My Dark Twisted Fantasy instead of  My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. According to Kanye this gross fault “diminished the image of the Los Angeles Times.”

The necessary corrections were soon effected with a SORRY to @kanyewest. All most have  been well received because Kanye has since take down his “discontent”.

Tyra Banks sued

Tyra Banks

A mother of a teenage girl who was invited to Tyra Banks show to talk about dealing with sex addiction is now sueing the super model. According to the woman, her daughter was contacted by the show after she responded to the show’s online request for guests, picked up in a limo, flown to New York City, put up in a hotel and taped in an episode of the show about sex addicts — all without her mother’s permission.

The woman whose name is Beverly Clendon is now suing Tyra’s show and Warner Bros TV group to the tune of $3 mil for damages.

Next time Tyra get permission, right?

Justin Bieber raps

Or speaks in tongues. Justin Bieber posted a less-than two minutes video in which he raps on his Twitter. The song is titled Speaking in Tongues and Justin is represented as Shawty Man, his alter ego.

The song is not that bad. Actually, it’s cool. And according to the Babay crooner, he just did the “skit?” to show off his skills inthe rap game.

So what do you think?

2shotz drops I AM WILLIAM

I AM WILLIAM album cover

The “Umunnamu” maestro recently dropped  his latest album titled I AM WILLIAM.

The fifteen tracker features collabos with Waje, MI, Jesse Jags, Ice Price, Zara and Olstars.

The single off the album Oyoyo featuring YQ was released earlier this year and had an enthusiatic reception. The album is supposed to continue where the single stopped. The artiste’s management who obviously have high hopes for it are already touting  as a contender for album of the year in an unspecified award show.  There are so many award shows so here’s to hoping it happens in at least one.

Look out for a review of the album in X2 soon.

Surprise party for MI

Mr. Happy Birthday

MI’s birthday was yesterday October 4th.  The rapper recognised as one of the “illest” of the year went on Twitter to announce the day. After getting the expected responses to his announcement he later came back on to thank all his well wishers.

A surprise party was thrown for him by his close peeps.

It is time to clear your throats, wipe your fogged up bathroom mirror, hold up your imaginary mic and belt out that tune as you pratice to become Nigeria’s next Omawunmi or Iyanya or…

The musical talent shows are back again this year.

First up the metamorphosed Idols. It started around these parts as Idols West Africa. But these days with a new production team it is going to be tagged Nigerian Idol. The most intriguing thing about WA Idols was what happened after the show. We all know Timi won but hey, Omawunmi is the real winner, right?

Timi the West African Idol

Sing Naija, SING!

So far the most consistent of all these has been MTN Project Fame which gave us Iyanya, Mike Anyasodo and… who next? The opening gala night show will be aired on Sunday 18th July.

Pepper don rest!

Apart from being entertaining, these shows have made stars out of unknowns and lots of money for “plenty people”. So… ARE YOU READY TO COME OUT OF YOUR BATHROOM?!!!

Ah-ha! No wonder the new-look hair. Since she's rapping, no fear that she might also "sound" like Rihanna...

Former Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria Munachi Abii has signed with The RMG Company as a solo rap artist. The beauty queen, who has in recent times featured on songs by artists like Banky W, Ikechukwu, Jesse Jagz and Waje, now says she’s started recording her as-yet-untitled debut album due out early next year. Muna has just recorded a song called ‘Pop Sugar’ with another RMG artist, Michael Word; and she is set to record her album with producers in Nigeria, the UK/Europe, and the United States where she hopes to pursue her other entertainment interests as well.

The reinvention: From Freestyle to Fr3style... wonder if it's only the name that changes.

Fr3style “Tha Shogun” Essien is back on the scene with two singles “Na Wa Oh” and “Ariwo Ko.” His upcoming album, My Name is Essien, will serve as a re-introduction of sorts to listeners.

Waiting... waiting... waiting...

The Rooftop MCs will release their anticipated third studio album in August. Although a specific date is yet to be named, Olusola Lasisi, the duo’s publicist confirms that the “Lagimo” rappers are set to release the album titled Back at One by mid August. Singles off the album ‘Sitting on the Rooftop’ and ‘One Song ’ are currently gaining airplay.

With this umbrella a la Mary Poppins- We are already convinced of her acting skills.

Writer and radio presenter, Tosyn Bucknor, has landed a role on M-NET soap, Tinsel. According to reports from her management company Share Dazzle, Tosyn, who has also revealed she is currently working on a singing project under the moniker Contradiction, will be getting a minor role as Osa in a couple of episodes of the third season of the soap. She was reported to have been on set at a University of Lagos location recently.

Should we expect a diss-track dedicated to Mimi (who has also gone into music and is currently known as the Lady Gaga of Ghana.)

Big Brother Africa III star Uti Nwachukwu has stepped unto the music scene with debut single “Go Down.” It is a Naija-pop song with some reggae influenced moments.

Snapped up right in your faces, guys!

MTV base VJ Cynthia ‘C-Von’ Okpala has come out to announce that she is engaged. A visit to her Facebook page reveals that the 24 year-old is engaged to Ozoemene Mbanefo of advertising agency 141 Worldwide. Okpala plans to exchange vows before year end.

Today is Michael Jackson day- at least, his death-day! (How macabre!)

X2 pullout in today’s NEXT Daily is dedicated to… (yeah, you got it!) the KING OF POP!

Rewind 365 days and you had Facebook profile pictures, ring-tones, even car plates being dedicated to the KING! Today is not even “almost” equivalent. For a remembrance of the one and only Wacko Jacko, it is more or less quiet. Fewer people give a damn this year than last year.

No matter… because the people that matter do. Like his Mom, Katherine Jackson, who just published a “coffee table” book of pictures about the life and times of her dear son amidst some controversies.

It’s a stub but someone was pained enough to update it (or create one) to include this afternoon’s unnecessary ef-up in Nigeria’s game against Greece.

The game had some firsts:

*Greece first World Cup win thanks to Nigeria
*First Nigerian to be sent off with red card in World Cup
* First of the tournament’s goals from a free-kick (Nigeria). Sadly, this last is no longer important or celebratory.

Everyone is going to blame Kaita for Super Eagles almost predictable finish at the ongoing 2010 FIFA World Cup.

He also made the headline on Yahoo news where his red card was marked as the silliest in the World Cup. It even beat Zidane’s headbutt.

He even got on Youtube that fast. Talk about quick road to fame… or infamy.

Update: Lego immortalises Kaita. The guy is getting more (in)famous.

It is the first World Cup on African soil and one would have thought that for the opening ceremony at least, all or most of the featured artists would be from Africa. The opening ceremony was one huge concert featuring music stars from the US alongside K’naan, Hugh Masakela, Angelique Kidjo and other African artistes but non from Nigeria.

It pained me seriously that they didn’t allow our Naija represent. Here are videos of some of the best performances (my choice).

For a theme song this was too cool. Who can remember these guys who sang the original (below)?
Loved Shakira’s gorilla hop.

I loved the next one for three reasons: Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Lira’s dress and the time she had to pull it up. (Okay, that’s four! ; ) ) I wonder why she dey fear? Is she not South African? They have the most famous breasts in the world!

K’naan waves his flag. Still loved the video even if looked lost waving a Brazillian flag.
