Now the die is cast…

9ice rocking the Inspire concert audience

Having got over the anxiety of who will win what at the fourth edition of the Hip Hop World Awards held on May 16 in Abuja, we at X2 now juxtapose the winners with our earlier prediction. Lest we forget the event did not lack lustre or bling  but that is not the business of the day, for those details, the prescribed place to visit is the X2 page on; sure you’re addicted already.

Album of the year The prediction favoured the short black boy MI’s Talk About it, but Gongo Aso (9ice) got the statuette. Fair enough, Gongo Aso rocked the whole of 2008 away but Talk About It came and offered an entirely new flavour on the Nigerian Hip Hop scene.  Since it was a Hip Hop World awards, Talk About It sounded more logical but home boy 9ice did work hard on the album so this category is NOT CONTESTED.

Artiste of the year We predicted D’banj – C’mon! Even critics of the album Entertainer all forgot about their criticism with this singer’s powerful live  performances.  D’banj is clearly the artiste that all event organizers want to perform at their events. Brother was becoming more popular than ice in winter. Behold! the winner was 9ice, who performed at the London 46664 (Mandela’s birthday) show last year. Did INEC conduct these elections as well!

Song of the Year Prediction: Gongo Aso (9ice).  Winner: Gongo Aso (9ice). Surprise! Surprise!

Recording of the Year A double miss it seems! What are these voters looking out for? Winner Michelle  (Etcetera) beating Street Credibility (9ice & Tu Face) and Not the Girl (Darey Art Alade)

Producer of the year D’banj wasn’t the Artiste of the Year and Don Jazzy isn’t the Producer of the Year. So what? Winner ID Cabasa produced  Gongo Aso,  the song of the year, so this is also NOT CONTESTED.

Best Music Video Winner Jude Okoye (Roll it) at least we were almost certain it wasn’t going to be Pere.

Best Reggae/Dancehall Album We were right on this prediction –  Gift and Grace (Timaya).

Best R ‘n’B/Pop Album Gongo Aso  again beats The Entertainer  to the statuette.  Any connection to D’banj not being at the Awards?

Best Rap Album Winner Talk About It (MI), Prediction Paradigm Shift (Mode9). NOT CONTESTED.

Best Collaboration Winner, Good or Bad (J.Martins ft Timaya &P-Square), same as predicted.

Best Rap Single Kini Big Deal?

Best Vocal Performance Male Banky W says ‘Don’t Break my heart’. We say ‘Okay’.

Best Vocal Performance Female Winner Omawunni (In the music). Didn’t bet on this category anyway.

Next Rated Category Omawummi, sister has got some talent.

Hip-Hop World Revelation Winner is same as predicted –  MI’ s Talk About It

Lyricist on the Roll Nine (Mode 9) although deserving, this has been a Mode9 dominated category. Where all of yo other rappers?

Best Street Hop Okay, we get it –  O 4 Ka SI BE is street hop.

  1. Interesting report…uhm, makes one wish for a repeat!
